Sioux Arrow Replica

This museum-quality arrow is a spot-on copy of one that was in a matched set of 4 currently housed in the Smithsonian that I had the privilege to examine back in 2015.  The original arrows were collected in 1869 and this one copies those in every aspect.  

The shaft is made of a dogwood shoot, which was commonly used by many Plains tribes for their arrows.  The point is made from a circular saw blade that was blackened, then the edges were ground to sharped them and expose the fresh silver metal underneath.  The point is wrapped on with sinew.  The fletch is a mix of turkey wing and tail feathers (another common feature of Plains arrows) that are wrapped on both ends with sinew and glued to the shaft with hide glue.  The forward sinew wrap is an open coil, which were present on the original arrows and which I've seen on a number of Plains arrows.  The nock is flared and enlarged just like the originals were, to give the archer a better grip when he used the pinch grip that was common on the Plains.  The long feathers are laid on straight, just like the originals.  And finally, the paint design and colors match those on the original arrows.

Arrows just like this once filled the quivers of Plains Indians as they roamed the untamed prairies hunting for bison and engaging encroaching enemies.
