This beautiful arrow is a spot-on copy of a set of two matching Hupa arrows from Northern California housed in the collections of the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. I had the privilege to examine the artifacts back in 2012 and this arrow copies the original arrows in every aspect including species of wood, paint design, materials, and dimensions.

The main shaft is a syringa shoot that's been carefully dried and straightened. The paint design copies the originals exactly, and it has been fletched with Canada goose wing feathers that have been wrapped on both ends with deer sinew and glued to the shaft with hide glue. The side-notched arrow point is made of cobalt blue glass. Yes, the original arrows were actually tipped with points made of chipped blue glass as well, so I followed suit. In the last years of free Indian life, many Native trade networks were disrupted, so Indians would use man-made glass for their arrow points if flint or obsidian was unavailable.

The point is glued with pine sap glue, then wrapped on with deer sinew and sealed with hide glue. Portions of the shaft under the feathers and also the front of the shaft have very tiny rings sanded into the shaft with horsetail rush, just like the original arrows. These rings are very commonly found on Native American arrows from northern and north-central California. It takes a lot of time and painstaking work to carefully sand those rings into the arrow shaft, but it adds that last bit of authenticity to replica arrows from that region. If you're going to replicate an arrow and call it museum-quality, you better know you're stuff, have done your research, and strictly follow the original artifacts. And this one has all the bells and whistles of the originals. Give this arrow 125 years and you won't be able to tell it from the originals.

Arrow is shipped in a PVC pipe to ensure safe delivery to your door. Information tag describing the construction info is included.
