Osage Orange Bow Stave SOLD

This Osage orange bow stave was made from a small diameter tree that was split in half to yield this stave.  It has a few snakey bends and a slight sideways bow to it, but Osage bends very well when greased and heated.  After greasing the stave, heat it over a fire or gas burner, then bend it sideways in a vise to straighten it.  I routinely use a forked tree as a vise and it works great for straightening bends like this one.  This stave has been seasoned for 2 years. 

This stave has a very clean back with only a few very small knots, none of which will pose a problem for the finished bow.  It has thin layer of sapwood, which can be left on or removed...whichever you prefer.  The spring growth is thin and there is lots of thick summer wood, ensuring the bow you make will be strong, durable and a top-performer.  Bows made from small diameter trees like this stave is typical of many Native American bows I've examined in museums across the country, so if you're looking to make a Native American style bow, this stave would work perfectly.
