This gorgeous arrow is a copy of an original Hupa/Yurok arrow from northern Califronia that's in the collection of the Mary Hill Museum in the Dalles, on the Washington State side of the historic Columbia River.  I had the privilege to examine the original arrow in the summer of 2016.  This arrow is made of a straight shoot of syringa, the same material used by many northern California tribes for their arrows.  Canada goose wing feathers were used for the fletching, and they match the vulture feathers that were used on the original arrow.  The feathers are secured front and back with sinew and are also glued to the shaft with hide glue.  The business end of the arrow is tipped with a side-notched obsidian point that's glued in place with pine sap glue, then it's wrapped on with deer sinew.  A draw point marker of sinew is wrapped on the shaft several inches below the stone point, and it is also painted with alternating thin bands of red and blue. This is a gorgeous replica of the high-quality arrows made by the Native hunters of northern California.  Click photos for larger images.

This arrow has subtle features that are difficult to see in the photos, but are signature traits to arrows made by the Hupa and other surrounding tribes.  At every point on this arrow where there is sinew wrappings or paint, there are fine, incised rings. These rings are made by sanding with a piece of horsetail rush.  These rings are very common on Native arrows from the northern California region.  No other material will work when it comes to creating those fine rings.  And this arrow has them.  I have horsetail rush from northern CA and I used it to create the horsetail rush grooves on this arrow.  It's a slow, painstaking process, but it's what you have to do to create, accurate, museum-quality replicas like this one.

Arrow Specs: Syringa shoot shaft, Canada goose wing feather fletch, sinew wrappings. 30 1/4 inches long.
