This stunning replica Arapaho arrow is an exact copy of one I examined in the Smithsonian several years ago and is an EXACT copy of the real deal. It was originally collected in the 1870's. It's made from a dogwood shoot that's beautifully straight. It has a long, lean steel point that's black in the center with silver edges, identical to the blacksmithed points that were traded to the Indians in the 1800's. The fletch is a mix of turkey wing and tail feathers as the original arrow was, and they're sinew wrapped and glued down with hide glue just like the artifact I copied. The paint design faithfully follows the original paint design in color and dimensions. The sinew wraps that hold the point are also wrapped with sinew that's been stained a bright red, just like the original arrow. This shaft has 3 straight shaft grooves the begin at the forward fletch wrap and extend all the way to the point.
This arrow is a gorgeous replica of the original arrow and has little details that most replicators miss: the slightly flared nock, the extra sinew wraps that spiral through the web of the feather to hold it down at the rear of the fletch, the low-cut feathers and the extra feather that protrudes from under the rear fletch wraps are all details that were specific to this particular arrow, and I copied exactly. In fact, the original arrow had one turkey wing feather that had some iridescence on it, and I even found a turkey wing feather in my stash that had that same iridescence, so I incorporated it into this arrow. Yes, I'm that particular about my replicas. I'll go to great lengths to copy them in every fashion, and this one is a fantastic example of that. A quiver full of these arrows was slung over the back of every Plains warrior. Their expert horsemanship, powerful bows, and steel-tipped arrows made the Plains tribes a formidable and dangerous adversary, even for the U.S. Cavalry that faced them in battle.
