If you want a truly museum-quality replica and hunting worthy weapon that copies original Native American artifacts, look no further than this exceptional set.  This replica Klamath bow, quiver, and set of 5 matched arrows is unlike anything I've offered before.  The bow is sinew backed juniper and is a copy of one I examined in the Smithsonian in 2008. It has a 2-ply sinew string, braintanned buckskin grip, and pulls 42 lbs at 27 inches.  The arrows are reed with greasewood foreshafts tipped with obsidian side-notched points that are razor-sharp.  The points are secured with pine sap glue and wrapped with deer sinew.  I made the points slightly different from each other....some are a little longer, some are shorter or smaller.  This natural variation is almost universal in the original arrows I've seen and I wanted this set to LOOK like the originals, so I made the points with the natural variability of the original artifacts.  Included is an additional set of 5 blunt hardwood foreshafts for target practice. Insert the hardwood blunts for practice, then put the obsidian tipped foreshafts back in when you're ready to hunt.  The fletch is Canada goose wing feathers secured with sinew and glued with hide glue. The arrows are painted with natural earth ochre and copy the design of an original Klamath arrow.  The arrows all measure 33 1/2 inches long. The quiver is raccoon skin turned inside out and painted with the same earth ochre that was used on the arrows. This quiver is a copy of an original raccoon skin Klamath quiver in the collection of the Peabody museum.  The quiver strap is braintanned buckskin and it's stitched to the quiver with thin strands of buckskin.

Though this set would be appropriate behind the glass case of a museum, what makes this set exceptional is that it's a working, shootable weapon designed for hunting. The reed arrows are matched to this bow, meaning they have the correct stiffness and balance so they fly beautifully when shot.  They also leave the bow at very high speed due to their lighter physical weight.  Make no mistake, this weapon is easily capable of taking deer-sized game at ranges of 15 yards or less.

Two design aspects of this set had to be modified, however.  The original bow was only three feet long so I made this bow longer to accommodate the longer draw of us larger, modern folk.  Otherwise its short draw would have made it impractical to shoot.  The arrows also had to be lengthened slightly to match the bow and ensure perfect flight.

The bow and arrows will be shipped in a sturdy PVC pipe to ensure it arrives at your doorstep in pristine condition.  Shipping is only $1!!  Click all photos for larger images.

The Klamath lived very closely to the Modoc along Klamath Lake in extreme southern Oregon and northern California.  Much of their material culture is identical due to their close proximity to each other.  In fact, they were once a single tribe, but an apparent dispute resulted in one group breaking off and forming its own distinct group.  These were people of the marsh, which supplied much of their raw materials for weapons, baskets, clothing, food and houses.
